Welcome to the 2011 Tennis Season at Roton Point!

Whether you’re a seasoned player, or just taking up the sport, we hope everyone will be sure to stop by the Pro Shop early in the season to speak with our tennis staff about all the adult and youth programs and events that are offered.  I’m very pleased to report that our Tennis Director, Tom Wright, and his wife Charlene, are returning for their 14th season to again oversee the Roton Point tennis program.  We are also very fortunate to have back our two assistant pros from last year – Rishan Kuruppu and Ryan Brookshaw.  Joining them will be a third assistant pro, Alastair Barnes, from Bournemouth, England, a junior studying law at the University of Tulsa; and Britt Gordon of Darien, who will maintain the courts in the closing hours each day, and assist with the children’s camps.  2011 is shaping up to be a great tennis season, and we encourage you to sign up early for the programs, clinics, and events that are of interest – see you on the courts!

From Tom Wright:

Dear Members,

I am looking forward to my fourteenth summer with great anticipation. As you know from past seasons, I will always try to encourage you and your friends to get involved. The tennis programs at Roton Point offer many opportunities; take advantage.

New members are always of great concern to me. I want you to become part of the tennis fabric as soon as possible. We all have a comfort zone; let me personally (on court) evaluate your present skill. If you wish, it would give me pleasure to introduce you to members of similar playing ability. It is that type of little “extra” that you may expect from the entire staff again this summer. Come by early and let’s catch up!

Tom Wright Director

Pro Shop

The hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. seven days a week. Be assured that your telephone inquiries will be handled quickly and courteously. The shop is well stocked with all your tennis needs and more, restringing and minor repairs are usually performed the same day, and there is always a full selection of demo frames available for the prospective buyer.

Tournament Book

Every member should know about what events are offered and when they are held. The “tournament book” will be available in the Pro Shop. In it will be a listing of all the events for the summer. This book also contains sign-up sheets for each of the events. Bring your calendar, pick your events and sign up early. Remember, some events have limited space.

Members, please understand that if you enter any events it is your responsibility to follow through. Each member will be called by the tennis staff and given their starting time.

About Mixers

Make yourself a promise that this summer you will attend at least one mixer. The tennis staff will always be on hand both to play and to move you around in a mixer format. Play a round or two, have some refreshments and play a bit more. That’s what these mixers are all about. I hope that sounds like fun, so be sure to join us.

DATES OF MIXERS:
May 2oth, 27th, June 17th, July 1st, July 23rd.

Davis Cup

Inquiries are always welcome concerning this popular all day event.

Balanced teams will play each other in two separate round robin formats. Each participant will have a variety of partners and opponents. Sixty four men and women will have the time of their life. Make no mistake, this is one event not to miss.

DATE:
June 25th – Davis Cup

Roton Point Tennis Committee

Ladies Teams Management Directive

The objective of the Ladies’ tennis teams (A,B,C) is to be as competitive as possible.  For this reason, the captains will choose from the top players available each week, potentially limiting the play of some team members.

After the initial tennis meeting, where all the interested women will sign up, the Ladies Tennis Committee will meet again to determine the initial rosters for each team.  Once the number of players per team is determined, the number of open spots for each team will be announced.  At that point, there will be several ways to determine who will be chosen to fill those spots.  None of these methods will be used exclusively.  These methods include:

-          Pro Evaluation – during the camp weeks;
-          Prior-Year Record – including assessment by current captains and the Tennis Director; and
-          Specific try-outs (if there are more players interested than spots available) – the players vying for the spots will play a set in a round robin format as soon as possible to determine a ranking.

After the selection period, the final rosters will be announced and submitted to the league.   While the beginning of the season placements may not be perfect, a record-based system will allow movement as  appropriate.  Furthermore, if a player is playing at the top of her team and winning consistently, she is free to approach the Tennis  Director and request a try-out for the following year, however, a winning record is considered a prerequisite.

Pre-season camps are open to all players who played a match for that team during the previous season.  All new members must attend the pre-season tennis camp for evaluation purposes or speak with the Tennis Director if this is not possible.

In order to participate on a team, each member must commit to play at least three (3) matches and are strongly encouraged to attend practice the day before her specific match.  The B Team will have both a “Competitive” team for those women who can commit to those three matches and a “Social” team for those women who would rather play only in round-robins and other intra-club functions.

In the case that no team members are available for a specific spot on a given team, that team may pull from one of the other teams according to league rules.  Subbing on a different team will not affect her standings on her assigned team.  The Ladies’ Teams’ Captains will strive to play as many women each week as possible by limiting the number of matches played by any one individual each week, to just one match.

Practice will be limited to the roster of the specific team.  Round Robins will be open to all team members.

Line-ups must be emailed to ALL team members by the day listed below to avoid any possibility of not having a full line-up and hence defaulting matches.  Line-ups will also be posted in the pro shop.

Any woman not displaying good sportsmanship both on the court (during practice time or match play) or off the court (in her treatment of coaches, captains, and teammates) will be asked to leave the team.

A Team – 8 Lines, 16 players.  Roster = 24 Minimum
-          Line up emailed and posted no later than Friday afternoon
-          Practice = Monday morning
-          Match = Tuesday morning-

B Team – 6 Lines, 12 players.  Roster = 24 Minimum
-          Line up emailed and posted no later than Monday afternoon
-          Practice = Wednesday morning
-          Match = Thursday morning

C Team – 6 Lines, 12 players.  Roster = 24 Minimum
-          Line up emailed and posted no later than Saturday afternoon
-          Practice = Tuesday morning
-          Match = Wednesday morning

2) Prior to play, if a player is notified they are improperly dressed, they may not go onto the court until the infraction is corrected.

3) Once play has begun and a dress code infraction is observed, the tennis staff will inform the person of the violation at the earliest opportunity. The tennis staff will request it not occur again, and hand out a copy of the Dress Code and Enforcement Policy. The violator will be allowed to finish the match, unless the violation is due to improper footwear that damages the court.

4) The General Manager will be notified of all infractions.

5) All dress code violations after the first infraction will result in a formal notice from the General Manager and a loss of tennis privileges.
