We have a Waterfront!

It sometime seems, to some of us members who have been here a long, long time, that new members don't seem to even recognize that we are a waterfront property on Long Island Sound!

Duh!  What do we need to do - USE this wonderful facility we have.  Swim more, paddle more, row more, sail more.  It is the mandate of Roton Point Sailing Association to help all members get going on all these great waterfront activities.

2009 is a Brand New Year

We have all sorts of data on the website about last year went, but basically, who cares!  Our full attention is focused on how 2009 is going to go, and there is no reason why this should not be one of our best seasons ever.  So if you are interested in any aspect of water activities, come down to the sailing beach and there will be people there sharing your passion, and ready and able to help you get going.

Golden Anniversary Regatta this year

The 50th Annual Golden Anniversary Fall Regatta will be sailed on September 19/20 2009.  We MUST make this a big event, and what better way will there be than for so many Roton Pointers who used to race to come back for one last time.  To that end, we'll have a Masters Open Class, for the older folks, with separate trophies.  If you are a Roton Pointer who knows how to sail a catamaran, no matter how rusty your skills may be, or how weak your desire may be, PLEASE consider entering this historic event.  To show you that planning has already started, click here for the 2009 Notice of Race, and here for the ad to go into every issue of Catsailor next year.

49th Annual Fall Regatta a Big Success

25 catamarans, plus C-Class cat PL3 and 3 trimarans participated in the 49th Annual Fall Regatta over the weekend of September 20/21, 2008.  Boats were divided into five fleets, being the Cruising class (4 boats), the A-Class (9 boats), Formula 18 (6 boats), Formula 20 (3 boats) and the Open class (7 boats).

Despite some shifty winds, 7 races were sailed by the beach cats, and a long-distance race on Saturday by the "cruising fleet."

The Norwalk Hour gave us a write-up; click here to read.  Sorry about the miss-spelling of Tony DiMauro's name.  Also, winners of Formula 18 were Janus and Nora Zellemer, Rick & Alex were second.

As usual, the traditional Saturday evening cocktail party and barbecue dinner were well attended.

"Slicers" Kevin, Marty & Dan

Here we have an "OOPS!" - in the Open class the Hobie 18 #12 of John Pullan was inadvertently given Hobie 16 Portsmouth numbers, instead of Hobie 18.  The correction changes third place to the Hobie 21 sailed by Peter Guiliano and crew Cynthia Anderson.  John has graciously given his trophy back, which is in the mail to Peter.

Click here for corrected regatta results.

Thanks go to all the Roton Point volunteers who worked hard to make the event an outstanding success.

Byrnes win Class and Overall in Stamford Denmark Friendship Race

Among over 100 entrants, there were four multihulls in Class M of the Stamford Denmark Friendship race held on Sunday September 7th.  The wind blew throughout the race, with some heavy gusts, on an absolutely beautiful day.  John (crew) and Greg (skipper) Byrne sailed Hobie 21 Nell faultlessly, to overtake all of the monohulls that had started up to 40 minutes earlier.  In fact, the Race Committee were totally unprepared when Nell crossed the finish line; they gave her a gun but forgot to record her finish time!  In addition to the class trophy, Nell also won the "Best Elapsed Time" trophy.

Pax Gifford and Mike Smith, sailing Alan Keyworth's Hobie 21 Prosail, took second, while Pat Harris & crew sailing trimaran Gypsy Heart came third.  Trimaran Zoom from Northport Yacht Club came fourth.

Thanks to Chip Romans and Tom Failla who manned the support boat Impatient Lady, which did no towing as both Roton Point boats sailed to and back from the race.

RPSA Salutes our Junior Sailing"Champs"

John Pullan takes the Friday Night Monohulls Championship

Five races were sailed August 29th, and Vice Commodore John Pullan won three of them; the other two went to Hal Thormahlen.  Click here to see final standings for the 2008 season.

97th Hambone was great success

2008 Hambone Winners - Margie Neaderland (wearing cap) with the broom for a "clean sweep."

John and Barbara Byrne and all the crew who somehow managed to fit onto John's Hobie 21 and take the hambone.

This year's Hambone Race was held on its traditional date of Friday July 4th Mike and Jennifer Smith took over the organization of the race from Ron and Nancy Borge, who had done it for the past several years. The number of boats entering the race was down from past years, but those who did participate enjoyed the usual throwing of water balloons and squirting of super soakers, and of course the post-race raffle.  Jennifer carved the 24 lb ham, of which very little was left by the time the race ended!

Results (in order of finishing – not that it matters!) were as follows:

Kayaks: Margie Neaderland, Ellen Steese, Curtis Bloom, and (all in the club’s sit-on kayak) Curry Bloom, Reilly Bloom, and Kyle Gifford

Optis:  Sail # 13058

Laser:  Julie Blumenfeld

Catamarans: Team US6 (Allan Keyworth and crew), Russ Barna and crew, Team Blackjack (Foster Kaali-Nagi and crew), John Burnap and crew.

Sunfish:  Hal Thormahlen, Larry Warble, John Pullan and crew Jodi

The hambone, awarded for last place, went to the fully loaded Hobie 21 sailed by John Byrne and extensive crew.  As John said after the race “The secret to success is getting a really bad start!”

 We have a Compass Rose!

Reviving an old tradition, Mike Smith did the design, and was ably assisted by Alan Keyworth, Marty "Stay within the lines" Roth,  Adam Lazarus (Waterfront Assistant) and of course Commodore Ron Borge in painting the compass rose onto the ground in front of the sailing beach.  The only complaint we have had so far is that Pete Weber says he can't read it from the water!

Catsailor ad

RPSA was founded in 1958 by the late Tony DiMauro, who served as Commodore for a remarkable 35 years until 1993. Tony became internationally known for sponsoring the development of C-Class catamarans, which since 1961 have raced for the International Catamaran Challenge Trophy, popularly known as the "Little America's Cup."  Tony DiMauro led four consecutive successful defenses of the Little America's Cup with a series of "Patient Lady" catamarans, at the very cutting edge of small-catamaran development. His "Patient Lady V" (complete with wing mast) is currently on display in the entrance hall of the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium.

RPSA has a long and proud history in promoting multihull sailing, as attested to by the collection of artifacts, trophies and newspaper articles on display at Roton Point. Membership of RPSA is automatically bestowed upon all Roton Point members.

Boating at Roton Point

Access to Long Island Sound is a primary Roton Point asset, and members are encouraged to make the most of it. There is a large fleet of privately owned catamarans, sailing dinghies, kayaks, and rowboats. In addition, several club boats are available for general membership use. Adult sailing lessons are also available.

Junior Sailing

This program is open to members' children ages 8-18. Students learn sailboat handling skills, water safety, boat rigging and basic racing strategy aboard Optimists, Lasers and Pixels. There are morning classes for novice sailors and afternoon classes for experienced sailors. Classes are coordinated with the swim team and tennis clinics so juniors can participate in all three activities.

Racing Program

The 2009 racing season will see eight "Sunday Race Days", which are scheduled in the Sailing Instructions. Racing will start with the Skipper's Meeting at 11 am, and races will begin at noon. Any members who want to crew can usually find a position at the Skipper's Meeting.

Friday Night Monohull Series

Throughout the summer, impromptu monohull races are held every Friday night beginning promptly at 6 pm.

Annual Multihull Regatta

The 50th Annual Fall Multihull Regatta is scheduled for September 19-20, 2009.

Special Events

In addition to the normal racing program, RPSA sailors will participate once more this year in the annual Denmark Friendship Race.  Four multihulls contested the multihull division in the 2008 race.

Social Events

This year’s planned RPSA social events include the opening ceremony on the Memorial Day weekend, the regatta dinner, and the highlight of the sailing year, the annual awards dinner on [October 18, 2008].
