Roton Point Tennis

Welcome to the 2012 Tennis Season at Roton Point!

Whether you’re a seasoned player, or just taking up the sport, we hope everyone will be sure to stop by the Pro Shop early in the season to speak with our tennis staff about all the adult and youth programs and events that are offered. I’m very pleased to report that our Tennis Director, Tom Wright, and his wife Charlene, are returning for their 15th season to again oversee the Roton Point tennis program. We are also very fortunate to have back, Head Tennis Pro, Rishan Kuruppu. Joining them will be assistant pros, Myrthe Molenveld from the Netherlands and Elliot Barnwell from England. 2012 is shaping up to be a great tennis season, and we encourage you to sign up early for the programs, clinics, and events that are of interest – see you on the courts!

Ladies Teams Management Directive

The objective of the Ladies’ tennis teams (A,B,C) is to be as competitive as possible.  For this reason, the captains will choose from the top players available each week, potentially limiting the play of some team members.

After the initial tennis meeting, where all the interested women will sign up, the Ladies Tennis Committee will meet again to determine the initial rosters for each team. Once the number of players per team is determined, the number of open spots for each team will be announced.  At that point, there will be several ways to determine who will be chosen to fill those spots.  None of these methods will be used exclusively.  These methods include:

  • Pro Evaluation – during the camp weeks;
  • Prior-Year Record – including assessment by current captains and the Tennis Director; and
  • Specific try-outs (if there are more players interested than spots available) – the players vying for the spots will play a set in a round robin format as soon as possible to determine a ranking.

After the selection period, the  final rosters will be announced and submitted to the league.  While the beginning of the season placements may not be perfect, a record-based system will allow movement as  appropriate. Furthermore, if a player is playing at the top of her team and winning consistently, she is free to approach the Tennis Director and request a try-out for the following year, however, a winning record is considered a prerequisite.

Pre-season camps are open to all players who played a match for that team during the previous season.  All new members must attend the pre-season tennis camp for evaluation purposes or speak with the Tennis Director if this is not possible.

In order to participate on a team, each member must commit to play at least three (3) matches and are strongly encouraged to attend practice the day before her specific match. The B Team will have both a “Competitive” team for those women who can commit to those three matches and a Social team for those women who would rather play only in round-robins and other intra-club functions.

In the case that no team members are available for a specific spot on a given team, that team may pull from one of the other teams according to league rules.  Subbing on a different team will not affect her standings on her assigned team.  The Ladies’ Teams’ Captains will strive to play as many women each week as possible by limiting the number of matches played by any one individual each week, to just one match.

Practice will be limited to the roster of the specific team.  Round Robins will be open to all team members.

Line-ups must be emailed to ALL team members by the day listed below to avoid any possibility of not having a full line-up and hence defaulting matches.  Line-ups will also be posted in the pro shop.

Any woman not displaying good sportsmanship both on the court (during practice time or match play) or off the court (in her treatment of coaches, captains, and teammates) will be asked to leave the team.
